Since 2001 the Wilmington Triathlon Club has been training it's members in the great sport of triathlon. Each year our club members travel across the State, Nation, and World to compete in the sport that they have come to love.
The Y Tri Club was formed in 2001 by Shannon Berg, Health and Fitness Director of the Wilmington Family YMCA.
The club began as a three-month program with 28 members to prepare triathletes for the Wilmington Family YMCA
Triathlon. Phyllis Mason, an avid local triathlete ranked as 2nd in the world in 2003, agreed to help
Shannon coach the club. Two Wheeler Dealer, Omega Sports and Health South were recruited as sponsors and helped
with technical support, injury prevention and offered discounts to club members. Due to the tremendous response
by its members and the community, in January 2002 Shannon started the official YMCA Triathlon Club with four more
coaches and more practice times and group activities. Bill Scott with Set-Up Inc. began his first year of the
NCTS series and provided us with support and education about races. We’ve grown to approximately 130 members in
2010 making us the largest club in Wilmington and have a coaching staff of 16; 8 swim coaches, 5 cycle coaches
and 3 run coaches. In the 2011 we are pleased and excited about our new head coaches who have been a part of our
club for many years. Head swim Coach Alicia Uhl, head cycle coach Gabe Salinas and head run coach Matt Willis will
bring new and exciting changes to the club and our members. We pride ourselves as a multi-level club and welcome all
levels from the novice to the elite triathlete. Join us and learn the sport of triathlons from the best coaching staff
that are passionate about the sport and our club.
